GTAC Goal

GTAC’s goal is to train “end users” to apply spatial technologies to their work and everyday lives.  These technologies have changed the way we view and manage our neighborhoods, towns, cities, businesses, and world.

GIS is the future of city planning and management for:

  • Economic Growth

  • Departmental integration

  • Efficiency in government

  • Data access

  • Flood Control

  • Emergency Management

  • E-government

  • Preservation of history

  • Land Management

  • Environmental Stewardship

In 1999, the Alabama Department of Economics and Community Affairs (ADECA) funded the development of four curricula to begin the applications training for GTAC:

  • GIS and Domestic Preparedness

  • Precision Agriculture

  • Commercial Space Based Imagery

  • Internet-based GIS survey course

GTAC, with its partners, develop detailed teaching curricula with extensive resource lists, training activities, content, and instructor lists.  Other topics include “Infrastructure Management and Urban Planning” and “Preserving the Past – Growth Management and Historic Preservation”, “Cultural Resource Management” and “Soils and Water Conservation”.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center opened in 1970 as a not-for-profit state agency of the State of Alabama.
